We are looking to add an Assistant Counsel with strong property experience to the team. The ideal candidate will also bring well-developed negotiation and analytical skills. The Assistant Counsel is expected to provide sound legal advice and make strong commercial recommendations based on her/his property and transaction experience, and to communicate this confidently and effectively to various internal stakeholders.
The successful candidate will be thorough, professional and well-informed while ensuring that property transactions are legal, binding and in the best interest of the business.
Key Responsibilities:
- Be accountable for the property documentation process from start to finish, working closely with the Acquisition and Development teams to draft and amend contracts (including leases, subleases and licenses) and heads of terms with the aim of minimising risks and securing maximum legal flexibility for the business.
- Develop a working understanding of the requirements and restrictions of our corporate debt facilities in order to ensure documentation is drafted optimally with these parameters in mind, and to ensure compliance.
- Provide clarification on legal language or specifications where required.
- Be accountable for the compliance of each property transaction and oversee the post-completion registration or charging process together with the legal secretary.
- Research and evaluate different risk factors regarding business decisions and operations, applying effective risk management techniques to offer proactive advice on possible legal issues.
- Collaborate with management to devise efficient defence strategies, working with the wider legal team to provide accurate and timely counsel to the Senior Management Committee and operational colleagues when required.
- Maintain current knowledge of alterations in legislation and interpret laws, rulings and regulations for property transactions.
- Communicate and negotiate with external parties (external counsel, public authorities etc.), creating relationships of trust.
- Deal with complex matters with multiple stakeholders.
- Conduct work with integrity and responsibility at all times.
Experience & Skills required:
- Proven experience as an Assistant Counsel in a business environment.
- Strong experience in property law.
- Strong working knowledge of litigation, lease transactions and property management.
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of corporate law and procedures.
- Ability to provide commercially minded legal solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to create legal defensive or proactive strategies.
- High degree of professional ethics and integrity.
- Sound judgement and ability to analyse situations and information.
- Outstanding communication skills.
- BSc degree in Law or J.D. degree.
- MA or BSc in Business Administration will be considered an advantage.
